XL Design was founded by tom watkins and royston edwards in 1981. david smart joined the company as co-partner in 1982. mark farrow joined later as a junior designer. XL wound down in 1986, partially due to the demands of Watkins' other job as band manager. Edwards and Smart went on to form accident (8)/Accident.
